You know those nights when you're staring at the ceiling, wondering if you're doing enough? Yeah, I have them too. Like, way too often. The questions just keep coming:
Am I being the dad my kid deserves? Am I actually any good at this design stuff? Will I be able to pay the bills next month? What if my clients realize I'm just... figuring it out as I go?
Let's get real for a second
I'm just a regular guy who happens to push pixels around for a living. And let me tell you - I'm terrified of so many things. Client calls? My hands still shake. Public speaking? I'd rather clean my entire house with a toothbrush. Showing my work to others? Major anxiety right there.
But here's the thing...
All those super-confident designers you see on Twitter/X or Instagram? They're probably just as scared as we are. They've just gotten better at faking it (or so I tell myself 😅).
The whole parent thing hit me like a truck
When our first kid arrived, holy moly - talk about a reality check! Suddenly I wasn't just that guy who makes pretty things in Figma. I became "dad" - and let me tell you, that title weighs a ton. I was:
- Running on few hours of sleep
- Trying to nail client deadlines
- Wondering if I should just get a "proper job"
The turning point
After months of feeling stuck, something clicked. All those people telling me "you should do your own thing" weren't just being nice. But I needed to believe it myself first. And honestly? That was (and sometimes still is) the hardest part.
What actually worked for me
I started small:
- Said no to projects that felt wrong
- Raised my rates (scary as hell)
- Started being honest with clients about having a family
- Stopped pretending I know everything
Where I am now
I went freelance - scary, but man, it's worth it. Now I can:
- Actually see my kid grow up
- Pick projects I actually care about
- Work in my pajamas (don't tell my clients)
- Make decent money without burning out
Look, here's the deal
If a nervous wreck like me can make this work, you absolutely can too. Your fear of messing up? That just means you care. Your imposter syndrome? Welcome to the club.
Take that small step.
Send that proposal.
Ask for that raise.
The worst they can say is no, right?
Remember - you're probably better than you think you are. I'm rooting for you!
PS: Still need someone to bring your design ideas to life? That's literally what I do! Let's chat!😉
P.
And where did you struggle the most?
Still not enough?
